Summer Youth Programs

Our scheduled programs will begin July 14th according to the following calendar.

  • 10:00am Thursdays SPECIAL OPPORTUNITY! Fishtown History and Tour $20: Make your own portable fishing pole that you can use to fish off the docks in Leland. Also get up close to the fish industry in Fishtown as the Preservation experts take you on a tour of the fishing community.  Learn about historical fishermen, docks, shacks, tugs, nets, and fish processing.                                                                                                                                                                  
  • 10:30 Toddler Time: This program is free to the community. We will bring books to life through song, dance, and your children’s favorite characters such as Lady Bug Girl, Pete the Cat, Belle, a dancing dinosaur, and Mother Goose!.  Every day except Sundays.
  • 11:30 pm Community Read: Do you love to read to children? Sign up in our store and choose a book off of our shelves to share with the young community. Parents, bring your little ones to experience a mutual love of reading.

  • 12:00-5:30 pm Make & Take Souvenirs: Join us in using your imagination to create your own memories or special Leland souvenirs.  Activities are priced individually and may include rock jewelry, metal and leather stamping, sand bottles, face painting, henna tattoos, nail and hair art, unicorn or superhero makeovers, statue painting, model boats, backpack decorating and more!

  • 7:30pm Open mic Nights: Come share your talents on our back patio!

  • 2-3 pm Middle Reader Book Club $25: This book club for ages 7-12 includes a book and weekly discussion with an associated activity. Scheduled books include: “The BFG” by Rohl Dahl, “A Wind in the Door” by Madeleine L’engle, “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” by Harriet Beecher Stowe and more!

  • 4-6 pm Activities for All Ages

    • Fairy Spotting $35: Two beautiful woodland fairies will teach you to think like a sprite and attract them to your yard. Program includes; storytelling, fairy makeovers with face paint and wings, dances in a Fairy Ring at the Village Green, make and take fairy houses using woodland materials and a fairy dance show for parents.

    • Great Lakes Mermaid and Rock History $30: Get your face painted in the spirit of Mermaid Lore. Learn about Lake Michigan dunes, glaciers, and local rocks. Storytelling continues as the Youth Leaders walk you to the beach to meet a real-live, swimming mermaid. Make a unique souvenir necklace from a special rock Lelanii will give you from her deep-sea bag!

    • Block Stamping & Poetry in the spirit of Gwen Frostic $20: Children will learn about legendary Gwen Frostic, and create a block print art and poetry book in her style. This program will take place on the LB Back Porch and the Village Green.

    • Great Lakes Pirate & Games $25: Did you know there were pirates in the Great Lakes?  Our own real pirate will tell stories about actual events and pirate lore. The Youth Leaders will take you to the Village Green for active pirate games.  GRRReat FUN!

  • 7-8:30 pm  Activities
    • Harry Potter & Wizard Trivia $10: Come and enjoy a crazy magical trivia night. This event will begin with “sorting” into trivia teams and competing with your knowledge of  favorite wizard series with a special prize for the winner. The Youth Leaders will be watching a movie afterward.  You are welcome to join them.

    • Old Fashioned Games $25 (per family) $10 individual: Learn from our storyteller, Gramma Susie, what it was like to grow up in Leland in the 1940’s. Experience old-fashioned fun as you try tabletop games like Tiddly Winks, Jacks, Marbles and Pick-Up Sticks. Then head to the Village Green for active games such as Kick the Can, Statues, and Tag. 

    • Lummi Rhythm Sticks $20: Lummi sticks, are used to create rhythms by Native American peoples. Have fun decorating your own set of Lummi’s and then practice cool chants, raps and beats. Participants get to make friends and keep their custom designed rhythm sticks!

    • Paint Watercolor Animals $25: Through a fun story and great instruction manual, our Youth Leaders will teach you to confidently draw & paint watercolor animals. You will take home your many great paintings and a new skill!

    • You are an Artist! (painting with guidance) $25: With direction from our Youth Leaders, you will be amazed at the great souvenir acrylic painting of Van’s Beach or Leland Tug you will create. Come embrace your inner artist with our step by step instruction (no experience needed)!

    • Whatchamadrawit Game Night $30 (per family)$20 (individual):  Join us for family game night on the LB Back Porch. Play Whatchamadrawit and laugh all night long! It’s even funnier if you have no artistic talent.  Includes a game to take home ($17.95 retail).

    • Open Mic Nights: Do you have a talent that you would like to share with the community? Now is your chance! Open mic nights are a time for people to play instruments and sing on the LB Back Patio.
