The Secret of Magic was a staff pick..so, of course, I had to read it. The main character is a black attorney working for Thurgood Marshall who is sent by him to a small town to investigate a plea for justice. The author, Deborah Johnson "Captures the duality of the Jim Crow South". In a compelling tale she portrays the intermingling and the deep divisions of the whites and blacks in the ritualized habits of the South. Magic has many meanings and shades. I find these stories so hard to read but this one like Washed, is well constructed and a strong story.
